Bentonite is a clay rock primarily composed of montmorillonite, a layered hydrous aluminosilicate mineral containing small amounts of alkali and alkaline-earth metals. It is chemically stable and has unique properties such as expansibility, adhesiveness, adsorption capacity, catalytic activity, thixotropy, suspension capability, and cation exchangeability. Because of these properties, bentonite finds wide applications in the fields of construction materials, chemical engineering, metallurgy, environmental protection, and more. Hundreds of bentonite-derived products are manufactured using it as a raw material, earning it the title "all-purpose clay".



Project Overview

Recently, the installation and commissioning of a 200,000 tons per annual bentonite powder grinding production line, constructed by SBM, has been completed! The client is a local large-scale listed company and a long-term customer of our company. This project had high specifications and strict requirements. After multiple comparisons, screenings, and technical communications, SBM's process design, with its high technological content, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness, won the favor of the client.

The entire grinding production line of this project was designed by SBM, with the main machine being the LM series vertical mill. The entire production line is scientifically and reasonably designed, with a compact and intelligent layout, allowing the client to experience the economic benefits brought by efficient and energy-saving new equipment and technologies.

Equipment Selection and Process Introduction

The grinding of bentonite is a crucial step in the production of steel pellets, and the efficiency and quality of the grinding directly impact the cost and quality.

As the core equipment in the bentonite powder grinding process, SBM LM series vertical mill integrates crushing, grinding, drying, powder selection, and conveying, ensuring the continuity and stability of bentonite powder production and improving the efficiency of bentonite grinding.

Bentonite Powder Production Process

Bentonite is mainly divided into sodium-based bentonite and calcium-based bentonite. Taking sodium-based bentonite as an example, dry processing is generally used to process bentonite with good original quality.



The process involves crushing the bentonite ore first, and then the material smaller than 20mm enters the drying system for drying. The dried material enters the storage bin for storage, and then is sent to the vertical mill for grinding into products of 100-325 mesh level by a conveyor belt. After that, the product is transported by a screw conveyor and bucket elevator to the finished product storage.

LM vertical mill operates under a sealed and negative pressure environment, preventing dust overflow and maintaining a clean working environment. The emission standard can reach ≤10mg/Nm³. Equipped with limit devices, it avoids destructive impacts and severe vibrations, ensuring stable operation with minimal vibration and low noise.

5.  Simple Operation, High Intelligence
Equipped with an automatic control system, the vertical mill allows for seamless switching between remote and local control, making operation simple and saving labor. It is also equipped with an automatic lubrication system, enabling 24-hour non-stop production.

6.  Strong Drying Capacity
The maximum moisture content of the feed can reach 15%. By adjusting the temperature of the hot air, it can meet the requirements of different humidity materials, enabling simultaneous drying and grinding.
